Check a Shopify product CSV before importing

A product CSV can look like a spreadsheet and still fail because of header spelling, variant identity, quoting or field formatting. This browser checker reviews the file you select and points to rows to inspect; it does not upload or change products.

What the checker reviews

The checker parses UTF-8 comma-separated data, including a byte-order mark, quoted commas, escaped quotes and line breaks inside quoted cells. It checks headers, Handle values, variant option combinations, selected numeric fields, inventory integers, image URL shape and simple product/SEO content signals. Every finding includes a CSV record number, column, explanation and suggested next step.

Rules are a dated snapshot of Shopify’s public product CSV guide and common import issue help page, checked on October 13, 2026. Shopify’s current format includes dynamic market-specific and merchant-defined metafield columns, so unknown headings are retained rather than rejected. This tool is for Shopify product CSV only; it is not a Google Merchant Center feed validator.

Errors, warnings and suggestions

Errors mark structural or value patterns that clearly need review, such as an empty Handle, repeated header or nonnumeric price. Warnings cover context-dependent risks such as blank or duplicate SKU, missing Title, or inconsistent variant identity. A blank or duplicate SKU is not automatically treated as an import failure. Suggestions cover SEO text length, Body HTML review and same-title products with separate Handles; they are not Shopify import rules.

Shopify’s requirements depend on whether you are creating products or updating existing products. For example, Title and Handle requirements differ between workflows, and variant-related values depend on option columns. Use the official documentation linked below to confirm the intended operation.

Preview and repair without replacing the source

The preview shows the detected headers and the first non-empty records, preserving the file’s original cell contents. Select a finding to jump to its row. You can download a report containing findings only, without product field values.

Optional repairs can remove fully blank rows and trim edge whitespace from selected non-protected fields. Before exporting, the page displays a cell-by-cell difference preview. Handle, Title, SKU, prices, costs, inventory, options, tax fields and product descriptions are excluded from trimming. The confirmed repair is a new CSV download; the original file remains untouched.

A practical import review

Start with a fresh product export or Shopify’s current sample format, then compare the header row with the file you plan to import. Review all Error findings first, then decide whether Warning findings reflect intentional catalog choices. Check Suggestion findings as editorial review, especially SEO fields and repeated product titles.

Before importing, confirm that the selected Shopify workflow is correct, inspect option identity for every variant, and keep a copy of your source file. A locally detected complete-looking image URL is not proof that Shopify can download the image. The checker does not contact image servers or Shopify.

Shopify product CSV checker FAQs

Does this upload my product file?+

No. The CSV is read in the current browser tab and is not sent to our server. Raw file contents are not saved after you leave or refresh the page, and product details are not sent to analytics.

Does a blank or repeated SKU mean Shopify will reject the CSV?+

Not necessarily. This checker reports blank and duplicate SKUs as configurable warnings by default. Whether a SKU is needed depends on your catalog and workflow; confirm that variants can be identified unambiguously.

Does the checker enforce every Shopify CSV column?+

No. Shopify has dynamic market columns, custom metafields, backward-compatible headers and create/update-specific requirements. This dated rule snapshot recognizes common documented headings, preserves unknown columns and links to the current Shopify guide.

Does an image URL check confirm that the image is available?+

No. It only checks whether the text looks like a complete absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL. The checker does not fetch the URL or confirm Shopify can access the image.

Can this validate Google Merchant Center feeds?+

No. The first version checks Shopify product CSV files only. Merchant Center has a separate feed specification and is not treated as the same format.

What does the repaired CSV change?+

Only repairs you select and confirm are included. The preview shows the differences first. It can remove fully blank records or trim surrounding whitespace in non-protected fields; it does not alter prices, SKUs, inventory, Handles, options, tax fields or product descriptions.
