What the cleaner keeps and removes
The output keeps paragraphs and headings (pasted h1 tags become h2 because product templates usually use the product title as the page’s main h1), line breaks, ordered and unordered lists, emphasis, blockquotes, horizontal rules, basic tables, links and images. It unwraps common layout and formatting containers such as div, span and font, so their text and supported children remain in reading order without their wrapper styling.
It removes style, class, id, data-* and event-handler attributes instead of trying to guess which supplier styles are harmless. Script, style, iframe, form controls, embedded media, SVG and similar active or theme-dependent elements are dropped with their contents. Comments are removed. Unknown passive wrappers are unwrapped rather than discarded.
How URLs and product images are handled
Links keep only a safe href (HTTP, HTTPS, mailto, tel or a relative path) and an optional title. Script-like protocols and protocol-relative URLs are removed; when a link has no safe destination, its text stays and the empty link wrapper is removed. Images keep a safe HTTP or HTTPS src, optional alt text and sensible dimensions; attributes such as srcset, style, class and alignment are stripped.
Keeping an image URL does not copy the image into your Shopify Files library. A supplier image may be blocked, temporary, hot-linked or unavailable to customers. Upload approved product images to Shopify or your chosen image host, replace the URL, and confirm the alt text and display size in your theme.
A practical cleanup workflow
Copy the description HTML from the supplier or source page and paste it into the left panel. Check the character and UTF-8 byte counts, review which attributes, elements and comments were removed, then copy the cleaned result. Paste it into the product description HTML editor in Shopify and save the product.
Preview the product on desktop and mobile. Check heading order, bullet lists, links, tables, image loading and spacing. The cleaner deliberately removes visual styling; use your Shopify theme for consistent typography and spacing. Edit the product wording for your brand and verify specifications instead of publishing a manufacturer description unchanged.
Why this output is an allowlist, not a promise about every theme
The cleaner reconstructs only the elements and attributes listed above, which makes its output easier to inspect than a broad regex replacement. Unsupported wrappers lose their styling, and features such as video embeds, custom buttons, inline colors, responsive srcset images and arbitrary data attributes will not survive. Add those needs through theme sections or supported Shopify content fields instead.
Shopify’s rich text editor can correct or filter markup, and the rendered result depends on the theme. Treat this output as a starting point: save it in a test product first, inspect the resulting storefront, and adjust the source or theme if an important layout feature disappears.
Scope, privacy and content limits
All parsing and output generation happen in this browser tab. The tool does not contact Shopify, inspect your store, upload images or save the pasted text. Its character and UTF-8 byte counts describe the current text only; Shopify limits can vary by product field, editor and API, so confirm the limit that applies in your own admin or integration.
This is a formatting cleanup aid, not a guarantee that arbitrary HTML is safe in every custom theme or app. Do not use it to preserve scripts, tracking pixels, forms, checkout controls or custom embeds. Review links and image sources, and test the saved result before using it across a catalog.
